Attending a Startup India Conference: A Founder’s Inside View of Government-Led Startup Initiatives Yr 2018

In India, startups have traditionally grown within the private sector, driven by ideas, funding, and market-led acceleration. A significant shift began under the BJP-led government with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who actively promoted a nationwide startup culture.

One key initiative was ranking Indian states on startup friendliness, bringing governance into the innovation conversation. As a founder of ArcTop Labs Pvt. Ltd., an early StartupIndia Recognised data technology company, I experienced this ecosystem closely.

A Rare Opportunity to Engage With Policymakers

This recognition gave me opportunities to attend Startup India conferences and government-led ecosystem events. In February 2018, I attended a major startup conference at Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra, New Delhi.

The event featured influential leaders, including Shri Suresh Prabhu, then Minister of Commerce and Industry. I also heard Shri C. R. Chaudhary, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, speak on India’s economic vision.

Inspiration Beyond Startups

Listening to such leaders live leaves a lasting impact beyond policy discussions. Their vision extended beyond startups, touching on India’s long-term economic and innovation future.

This conference marked my third participation in major government-led startup initiatives. For first-generation founders, these early initiatives offered encouragement and visibility.

Real Benefits of Startup India Recognition

Startup India recognition brought tangible early-stage benefits. ArcTop Labs received AWS cloud creditsZoho email access, and other pro bono digital resources.

These incentives played a meaningful role in helping a young data startup survive and scale. For digital-first companies, such support reduces early operational pressure significantly.

Ground Reality and Ecosystem Gaps

Over time, I felt implementation could improve substantially at the ground level. Many officials involved lacked practical exposure to startup operations and market realities. Like the IAS level officers L N Gupta & Ramesh Abhishek in this event whom i had connected personally found they Startup Ecosystem understanding altogether.

Despite interactions over time, it often felt bureaucracy outweighed ecosystem understanding. Policy intent was strong, but execution struggled to match founder needs.

A Learning Curve Worth Experiencing

A thriving startup ecosystem requires deep well stablished private sector involvement, not just government policy frameworks. Governments should enable, not dominate, startup execution and ecosystem influence.

I personally observed incubators receiving grants without effectively supporting real startup growth. They focused more on access fees than genuine collaboration or mentorship.

For me, it became another chapter of Next Struggle, every interaction became a learning experience, shaping better choices for my startup and career. This journey sharpened my understanding of policy, ecosystem gaps, and strategic decision-making.
