Riding My Harley from Delhi to Bhopal: A Memoir of Grit, Heat and an 800+ km Leap of Faith

In March 2017, I undertook a journey that changed more than just my coordinates. It tested my discipline, endurance, and belief in myself. It was a long-awaited, long-delayed dream—riding my Harley Davidson from Delhi to Bhopal in a single day. More than 800 kilometres, one rider, one machine, and a road that revealed everything from beauty to chaos.

I had ridden this route once before in 2009 on a Bajaj Avenger, but this time it felt different. The weight of the Harley, the responsibility on my shoulders and the rediscovery of my old biker instincts blended into a powerful inner pull. Years of work, travel and leadership roles had distanced me from the nomadic side of myself. This ride felt like reclaiming an identity I had paused, but never forgotten.

The First Miles – Cold Wind, Quiet Roads and a Loud Heartbeat

I started before sunrise because I knew preparation was half the victory in any long-distance motorcycle journey in India. The morning was crisp, yet the excitement inside me made everything feel warm and alive. My plan was simple—stay as close to major highways as possible and avoid city traffic at all costs.

The Yamuna Expressway gave me the perfect launch. Smooth tarmac, sparse movement, clean visibility—the kind of start every rider hopes for. I reached Agra early enough to dodge the dense local traffic, and for a moment, I felt the ride would remain easy. But the road had different plans.

Gwalior and the Harsh Reality of Indian Highways

As I approached Gwalior, the real test began. The disorganised traffic, overloaded trucks and unpredictable lane behaviour hit me all at once. The Harley’s weight became more and more noticeable, especially while manoeuvring around slow-moving vehicles on broken patches of highway.

This was the moment when my Delhi to Bhopal road trip turned from a dream into a battle of patience. I kept checking Google Maps, trying to choose the path that would hurt me least. Finally, I took the route via Jhansi, Datia and Lalitpur—a choice that would offer both challenge and charm.

At every stop, people gathered around the Harley Davidson. Some compared it to their beloved Royal Enfield, others simply stared at the twin exhausts and massive engine, confused but fascinated. Very few had seen such a bike on these remote highways. Their curiosity became an unexpected part of my journey and gave me small moments of joy between the long stretches.

Lalitpur to Bina – The Road That Felt Like a Test

By the time I crossed Lalitpur, evening had settled in. I still had more than 250 kilometres left, and fatigue was slowly catching up. Google Maps guided me through the state highway that connected Bina, Ganj Basoda and Vidisha—a road I would soon regret choosing.

Darkness fell quickly, and with it came a new layer of difficulty. The windshield began reflecting the harsh headlights of vehicles coming from the opposite direction. Every few minutes, I had to adjust my posture—sometimes peeking above the shield, sometimes sideways—just to see the road clearly.

This part of the journey tested everything:

  • my concentration
  • my physical strength
  • my endurance
  • my faith in the machine beneath me

Every kilometre demanded awareness, balance and courage. It wasn’t just a ride anymore—it was a fight to stay steady, alert and safe.

The Final Push – A Rule Broken and a Destination Earned

I always told myself never to ride long distances at night. But Bhopal was finally within reach, and something inside me insisted on pushing forward. I trusted my instincts and took a leap of faith, slowly but steadily navigating the last stretch.

By the time I reached Vidisha and continued toward Bhopal, exhaustion and relief were flowing together. The city lights felt like a welcome embrace after hours of darkness and uncertainty.

I reached home around 9:30 PM. My parents saw the Harley Davidson for the first time and their pride made the fatigue disappear. That final selfie outside the gate wasn’t just proof of completion—it was evidence of resilience, discipline and a rider’s stubborn heart.

What This Ride Actually Taught Me

Looking back, this 800+ km solo Harley Davidson ride gave me more than adrenaline or adventure. It taught me:

  • Patience under stress
  • The discipline required for long-distance riding
  • The importance of calculated risk
  • Respect for the machine and the road
  • The quiet confidence that comes only through endurance

I realised that maybe I am one of the very few in India who tested the true grit of a Harley Davidson on such a long solo journey in a single day. But more importantly, I rediscovered the rider within me—a version of myself that had been waiting patiently for years.

This journey will always remain one of the most defining chapters of my life. It was bold, exhausting, unpredictable and incredibly rewarding. And sometimes, that’s all you need—one long road, one machine you trust, and the courage to follow the spark inside you.

Every kilometre was worth it.
Every risk made sense.
Every moment taught me something new.

And when I look at that final selfie today, I know exactly why I took that leap.
