During my six-month self-exploration motorcycle journey across India in 2009 on my Bajaj Avenger, I experienced countless unforgettable moments. Yet one unplanned visit to a small government school in Khulri, Madhya Pradesh, remains deeply etched in my memory. While travelling with my cousin after taking a holy dip at Burman Ghat on the sacred Narmada River, we enjoyed a traditional Bharta Bati meal. My cousin, Monu, suddenly suggested visiting his father, Shri Narendra Singh Shivanshi, who taught at a nearby village school. Without hesitation, I agreed, and we set off on rough rural roads that made every kilometre an adventure.

Highlights from the Memoir

By the time we reached the school, the monthly examinations were underway, and every teacher was busy supervising students. After the exams concluded, my uncle warmly introduced me to the entire staff with pride, telling them that “Bhanja, Delhi se bike challa ke aye hai” [Nephew drove Bike all the way from Delhi]. The announcement surprised everyone, and many gathered around the motorcycle, eager to hear stories from my journey. The students welcomed me with a glass of water, a simple gesture of respect that reflected the warmth and humility of rural India. I shared photographs and memories from places like Ladakh, inspiring many young minds who dreamed of travelling beyond their villages.

What stayed with me most was not the motorcycle or the journey but the determination I witnessed inside that small village school. I saw children cycling or walking several kilometres every day simply to receive an education. I also saw dedicated teachers travelling long distances on bicycles and fuel-efficient motorcycles to ensure those children never missed an opportunity to learn. Their commitment reminded me that the future of India is quietly being shaped in classrooms far away from the spotlight, where education continues to transform lives despite limited resources.

As I rode away from Khulri that afternoon, I carried much more than memories. That unexpected visit strengthened my belief that every generation has a responsibility to build a better future for the next. I realised that honest work, paying taxes, supporting education, and investing in rural infrastructure are meaningful ways to contribute to nation-building. Looking back today, I consider that impromptu visit to a rural school one of the most valuable lessons from my 2009 motorcycle journey—a reminder that the road to a stronger India begins with educating every child, regardless of where they live.
