Life in India often comes full circle on the day a government employee retires. It marks the completion of decades of honest service, unwavering dedication, and a lifetime of responsibility. I have always believed that retiring with dignity, free from allegations of corruption or misconduct, is one of life’s greatest achievements. Equally important is celebrating this milestone with family and relatives, reflecting the strong community bonds that continue to define the spirit of India.

For my father, Shri Shobha Ram Gadewal, this unforgettable milestone arrived in March 2016 after nearly four decades of service with the Madhya Pradesh Electricity Board (MPEB). His career took him across several towns, including Korba, Birsinghpur, Jabalpur, Sirmour, and Sarni, where he worked tirelessly through demanding shifts, six days a week. His retirement was not simply the end of a government job; it was the successful conclusion of a lifetime dedicated to serving both society and his family.

Highlights from the Memoir

Growing up as a family of four, I witnessed what it truly means to be a responsible father and husband. My father worked relentlessly to provide a secure home, quality education, and opportunities that shaped our future. Those achievements were possible because of his personal sacrifices, my mother’s unwavering support, God’s blessings, and the enduring strength of our extended family. His retirement day celebrated every one of these pillars that carried our family through life.

The entire family came together to honour this remarkable occasion. I took a week away from my corporate responsibilities, while my sister travelled from IIT Kanpur, where she was working as a research scientist. Relatives from both my father’s and mother’s families gathered to celebrate, reminding me that Indian families grow stronger through togetherness during life’s most meaningful moments.

The day began before sunrise with a Satya Narayan Katha, expressing gratitude to God for guiding our family through decades of hard work and blessings. Later, my father visited his office for the final time, thanking colleagues, peers, and juniors who had become an important part of his professional journey. The farewell ceremony was filled with heartfelt conversations, warm memories, and sincere wishes for a peaceful and fulfilling retired life.

One memory from that afternoon remains crystal clear. As my father walked out of the Sarni Power Plant for the final time, I invited him to ride home with me in our Mahindra Thar. His official driver politely requested to drive him once more in the government jeep, as he had faithfully done for many years. I immediately realised how meaningful that final journey would be. I captured a photograph at the power plant gate, where my father stood proudly wearing garlands. That single image has become one of my most treasured family memories.

The journey home felt like a celebration. Loud cheerful music echoed from our Thar while the official jeep followed behind. As we reached home, fireworks filled the sky, music played loudly, and the entire neighbourhood shared our joy. My mother, Smt. Manju Lata Gadewal, welcomed her husband with traditional aarti, tilak, flower petals, and garlands. It was a beautiful Indian tradition that transformed a retirement into a heartfelt homecoming.

The celebration continued in our lawn with music, delicious food, countless photographs, and friends, relatives, neighbours, and my father’s colleagues sharing stories from his remarkable career. That evening also taught me an unforgettable lesson of family bond and moments that matter most. Another respected MPEB employee from our colony, Samre Uncle, also retired on the very same day. Unlike our home, his house was quiet because only he and his wife were present while their children are abroad working. I could not let such a significant milestone pass in silence. I invited both of them to join our celebration, where my father and Samre Uncle cut the retirement cake together. Watching two lifelong government servants celebrate under a sky full of stars remains one of the warmest memories of my life.

As I look back on that unforgettable day, I realise my father’s retirement represented far more than the end of a career. It celebrated honesty, discipline, sacrifice, family values, and the enduring strength of Indian relationships. Through this memoir, I express my deepest gratitude to my father and to every father who spends decades working selflessly to protect, educate, and nurture their family. Their quiet sacrifices build strong homes, resilient communities, and ultimately, a stronger India.
